Tangerine 1975 XS Chopper

This bike has been my daily ride for almost 2 years now. Started with a stock frame and a 1972 engine that I built from 3 motors. I cut the frame with no mercy leaving only the engine mounts and a partial backbone. I bent up up a goos neck that looked right with a little more rake and stretch than stock. I uses a 1″ harley type neck that allowed me to run the lowered and shaved mid 70’s narrow glide. 21 mini brake wheel for ultimate stopping power….. on an incline. The rear section is only a few inches longer than stock and handles well. XS 18″ rear wheel Everything was molded after final welding. The tank is an old G.M.E. The fender is a ribbed ford style. Frame paint is single stage PPG.

The tins are H.O.K. Tangerine with some maroon stripes. Narrow z bars with offset risers, and other custom stuff. Old Aris headlight. This bike recently carried me from Miami to Iowa on a 3 day trip with its original engine.

The 1972 motor was finally getting tired , so it was replaced with a low mileage 1978 motor. It is all tuned up and running great, ready for some more long miles.

Excellent compression, no smoke, oil leaks, runs real strong. It also just got its 4th new rear tire. I’m selling it only to fund a new project. This bike was built to be ridden. A reliable, good looking, and fast foundation for getting in motion……..

Chopper American Style Modification

As far as the history of chopper is concerned, the choppers were developed after the Second World War. The former soldiers wanted the motorcycles like the one’s they drove during the war, so they brought bikes and modified them according to the one’s they had during the war times. The bikes that they built were like the ones wherein the front fender were taken off from the bikes and the rear fender came into two sections and the soldiers just took off the rear most portion. The new shorter fenders were called as bobbed fenders and the people who used the bikes after such modifications were referred to as bobbers.







After this there were radical changes in the bikes or to the choppers, there was a state wherein many of the people would strip every piece of the bike and rebuild it strip by strip. Building a chopper requires lots of knowledge about the engineering of the bikes. They fabricated the different parts including the exhaust pipes or gas tanks so that they could feel the experience of their self designed bikes. It was at this stage that the people began to call these bikes as choppers because they had chopped each and every part of the bike and created something new.

In the 1960’s and 1970’s some of the movies like the "The Wild One" and the "Easy rider" featured these choppers and thus the choppers were in the limelight. It was after this that the nation saw many chopper enthusiasts , the crazy bikers almost spent about months and several weeks to design their customized bikes and all for various needs like comfort, touring, speed and even to create the styling statement.

In the 1980s the motorcycle companies also began to offer the customized bikes or the choppers based on some of the most popular designs. But after the economic recession the culture of choppers so its decline but how long the crazy bike users can survive in 1990 again there were many companies offering many different varieties of choppers. In this recent days the choppers new creation really rocks.

Amazing all the frequent updates here with all kind of XS 650 twins. Great to see so much variation on the XS theme. Trackers, chops, bobbers, café-racers, I really dig em all, you know the XS virus hit me hard for almost 25 years now. In 1988 already I rode a Santee framed XS chopper with high sissybar, apehanger and a long overstock springer front end. Several XS project followed, not only chops and bobs (see my Back 2 BasiXS), but also some speedy racers. The latest racer is the LynXS which I like to show you in this column-edition.

The name LynXS is a combination of two passions in my life, the Lynyrd Skynyrd band and …of course… the XS 650. I prefer to call this creation not a café-racer but a café-fighter, cos the old Fifties style is fused with hyper modern influences. Everything is lightweight alloy and maximum tuned on the LynXS, finally I can compete with my mates’ Buells. No matter what they tried, they can’t get my out their mirrors haha. It runs like a jet, it’ll cruise at 160 KPH and on the Dyno it reached 210 kilometres per hour.

Think the contrast between the bright orange powder coated frame and wheels and the hand polished allloy parts all over the bike turned out superb. The alloy tank is a real eye-catcher. Didn’t made this item myself, WBO Racing in Germany did this good job and they were also responsible for the alloy seat.

A nice detail is the window I made in the right engine cover, which gives a nice look at the clutch. Especially with the engine runnin´ it´s real cool !

The modified clutch has very heavy springs to deal with the 70 HP, so the cable is replaced by a hydraulic operated one.

The original swing arm was too heavy and less stiff and is replaced by an aloy swing arm donated by a Suzuki Katana 1100 which was scored at the local motor scrapyard for less bucks, same like the GSX 750 R wheels and 54 mm upside down front fork.
Rear Brake came of a VX 800 while the front brakes are also GSX-R items. The two 320mm floating discs in combination with two six-piston calipers provides an unbelievable brake power!
